Underlay might not be the most glamorous part of an artificial grass installation, but it's one of the most important, and the difference it makes underfoot is immediately noticeable. Our range of artificial grass underlay is designed to sit beneath your turf, adding a layer of cushioning that makes your lawn feel softer, more comfortable, and more natural to walk on.
All three of our Astro Cushion options are foam underlays for artificial grass, made from a permeable closed-cell foam that cushions without compromising drainage. That means rainwater can still pass through freely, even with underlay in place. No soggy patches, no pooling. The foam construction also helps to even out any minor irregularities in the sub-base beneath, giving your grass a smoother, more even finish once laid
We offer our artificial grass shock pad underlay in three thicknesses, 5mm, 10mm, and 15mm, so you can tailor the level of cushioning to your project. The 5mm is a great everyday option, while the 10mm and 15mm are particularly popular for play areas, gardens with children, or anywhere a bit of extra underfoot softness and impact absorption is a priority.
You don't strictly need it, but we'd strongly recommend it. Artificial grass underlay adds cushioning that makes your lawn feel much more comfortable underfoot, helps protect the grass from wear over time, and can improve the overall finish of the installation by smoothing out any unevenness in the sub-base. It's a relatively small additional cost that makes a noticeable difference to the end result.
Our Astro Cushion range is a permeable closed-cell foam mainly manufactured from recycled PU (polyurethane) foam. This gives it a firm but cushioned feel underfoot, while the permeable structure allows water to drain through freely, so it won't cause waterlogging or affect the drainage performance of your artificial grass.
We stock three thicknesses: 5mm, 10mm, and 15mm. The 5mm foam underlay is a popular all-round choice for standard garden lawns. The 10mm and 15mm options offer progressively more cushioning and impact absorption, making them ideal for children's play areas, gardens with elderly or less mobile users, or anywhere comfort is a higher priority. If in doubt, give our team a call and we'll help you decide.
A shock pad underlay, sometimes also called a shockpad or impact pad, is a foam layer installed beneath artificial grass that absorbs impact. It's particularly important in play areas and sports surfaces where falls are more likely, as it helps to reduce the risk of injury. Our Astro Cushion underlays function as shock pad underlays, offering varying degrees of impact absorption depending on the thickness you choose.
No, our foam underlay for artificial grass is fully permeable, meaning water passes straight through it just as it would without underlay. You won't experience any reduction in drainage performance, even during heavy rainfall. It's designed to work seamlessly with the existing drainage holes in your artificial grass backing.
Yes. The permeable nature of our foam underlay means that liquid drains through freely, which is particularly useful if you have dogs using your artificial lawn. It won't trap moisture or odours beneath the surface, making it a practical choice for pet-friendly gardens.
Installation is straightforward. The underlay is rolled out over your prepared sub-base and cut to fit the area, with any joins butted together rather than overlapped. The artificial grass is then laid on top in the usual way. Fixing pins, adhesive, or a combination of both can be used to secure everything in place. Check out our full installation guide if you need more details.
Absolutely, underlay is actually particularly beneficial on concrete and other hard surfaces, as it adds the cushioning that a solid base can't provide on its own. It also helps to compensate for any very minor surface imperfections. On concrete, the underlay and grass are typically secured using adhesive rather than fixing pins.
